About

Getting Inside

  • The approach to the chapel is step-free.
  • Princeton University Chapel has 2 entrances, 1 entrance provides step-free access via ramp.
    The step-free entrance gives access to the Chapel near to the Chancel.
  • The main entrance has stepped access.

Getting Around

  • There is level access to the majority of the Chapel, however some areas of the building do require stepped access.
  • There are 5 steps to access the Chancel at the east end of the Chapel.
    There are an additional 5 steps within the Chancel to access the altar and between 1 and 7 additional steps to access the choir pews.
  • The Chancel can also be accessed by 10 steps located just inside the step-free entrance. These steps can be bypassed by a stairlift which provides level access to some of the pews in the chancel.
    There is then from this position a second stair lift which can be used to access the central part of the chancel.
  • There is 1 step to access the Marquand Chapel and another to access the altar within the Chapel.
  • Surfaces within the Chapel consist of hard and smooth stone flooring.
  • There are pews for seating throughout the Chapel.

Entrance (Step-free)

  • This entrance is located to the south east of the building.
  • This entrance gives access to the Chapel entering near the Chancel.
  • There is step-free access via ramp at the entrance.
  • The ramp has a gradient of 1:13.
  • The ramp has a resting area.
  • The width of the ramp is 4ft 8in (141cm).
  • The ramp has handrails on both sides.
  • The ramp bypasses the steps.
  • There are 6 steps.
  • There are handrails on both sides.
  • The handrails are at a height of 2ft 11in (89cm).
  • The handrails cover all steps.
  • The height of the highest step is 7in (18cm).
  • The minimum tread depth is 11in (27cm).
  • There is a key fob/card reader at a height of 3ft 1in (95cm).
  • There is a single automatic door at this entrance.
  • The door opens towards you.
  • There is a push plate/sensor at a height of 3ft 1in (95cm).
  • The width of the opening is 2ft 9in (85cm).
  • The door has a high color contrast.
  • There are double doors located at the entrance however only the right hand door is automatic.
  • There is a second set of manual doors.

Entrance (Main)

  • This entrance is located to the west of the building.
  • This entrance gives access to the main chapel area.
  • There is stepped access at the entrance.
  • There are 6 steps.
  • There are handrails on both sides.
  • The handrails are at a height of 3ft (92cm).
  • The handrails cover all steps.
  • The height of the highest step is 6in (15cm).
  • The minimum tread depth is 1ft 2in (35cm).
  • There are two similar sets of doors side by side at this entrance.
  • There is a canopy or recess which provides weather protection at the entrance.
  • There are double manual doors at this entrance.
  • The doors are permanently held open.
  • The width of the opening is 4ft 8in (142cm).
  • The doors have a high color contrast.
  • There is a second manual door.
  • The second door opens away from you.
  • The second door requires effort to open.
  • The width of the opening is 4ft 9in (146cm).
  • The second door has a high color contrast.

Stair Lift (Chancel Lift 1)

  • The lift is located just inside the step-free entrance.
  • The lift has a turning space of 2ft 6in x 4ft (76cm x 122cm) in front of it.
  • The dimensions of the lift are 2ft 9in x 3ft 11in (84cm x 120cm).
